A bee sting on the eyelid can be extremely painful and cause dramatic swelling. Because of the sensitive nature of the eyes, seek urgent medical attention if the stinger is in the eyeball, your vision is blurry, or you have signs of a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).

If the sting is only on the eyelid and you have no severe allergy symptoms, take these steps immediately:

1. Check for the Stinger

If you can see the stinger, remove it as quickly as possible to stop venom from continuously pumping into your skin.

  • Do not use tweezers or your fingers to pinch or pull it, as this can squeeze more venom in.
  • Do scrape or brush it away gently using the edge of a credit card, your fingernail, or a dull, stiff object.

2. Rinse Your Eye Safely

  • Gently rinse your eye with clean, lukewarm water or saline solution for 15 minutes.
  • Remove contact lenses immediately if you are wearing them.
  • Never rub your eye, as this pushes the venom deeper and can scratch the cornea.

3. Manage Swelling and Pain

  • Apply a cold compress: Place an ice pack wrapped in a clean, soft cloth (or a cloth soaked in cold water) onto your closed eyelid for 10–15 minutes at a time.
  • Over-the-counter relief: Consult a pharmacist about taking oral antihistamines to reduce swelling, or pain relievers (e.g., acetaminophen or ibuprofen) for the discomfort.

When to See an Ophthalmologist or Doctor

Even if it feels mild, getting stung on the eyelid carries a risk of the stinger migrating into the eye or causing secondary inflammation. Visit an American Academy of Ophthalmology eye specialist or your nearest urgent care if:

  • The stinger penetrated the eyeball itself.
  • You experience changes in your vision, extreme light sensitivity, or persistent tearing.
  • The swelling gets progressively worse over several days or shows signs of infection (e.g., pus, discharge).

Call emergency services immediately if you experience any symptoms of a severe allergic reaction:

  • Difficulty breathing or wheezing
  • Swelling of the throat, tongue, or lips
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint
  • A widespread rash or hives
