The Wedding RSVP “M”

Posted on October 27, 2026

The single letter “M” on a wedding RSVP card is a small detail with a surprisingly traditional background. Rooted in formal written etiquette, it appears as the first letter of titles like Mr., Mrs., Ms., or Miss and serves as a subtle prompt for guests to complete their formal names on the line that follows. In its original context, the printed “M” gently guided guests to respond using these formal titles, reinforcing the tone of a carefully planned, traditional event and reflecting the customs of written correspondence that valued structure and politeness.

Today, however, the way guests respond to that printed “M” has become much more flexible. Modern wedding customs increasingly emphasize comfort and authenticity over strict adherence to historical etiquette rules, and many guests simply write their names naturally without worrying about matching a formal title. Some may still follow the older pattern and complete Mr., Mrs., Ms., or Miss, while others treat the line as an open space for whichever name format feels right to them. Across these different approaches, one consistent point stands out in current practice: couples care far more about receiving an accurate, timely RSVP than about how precisely guests use the traditional “M” prompt. As long as the response clearly indicates who is attending, the exact formality of the title is usually a minor detail compared with the practical need to plan their celebration.
