At first glance, the winter landscape seems straightforward. Snow blankets the ground, tall trees line the background, and a clearly visible deer quickly draws your eye. Yet hidden among the trunks, branches, shadows, and empty spaces is the suggestion of a human face. The deer acts as an obvious distraction because its shape is so easy to recognize, turning everything else into mere background. Those overlooked details, however, are exactly where the hidden image may be found. Instead of asking what objects you see, you are encouraged to ask what shapes you see, paying attention to tree trunks, branches, shadows and the spaces between them, where negative space can form as much of the picture as the visible objects.
A single tree trunk or dark patch can appear ordinary or just another shadow, but when several shapes are viewed together, they can combine into a pattern that resembles a human face. If you cannot find it immediately, you are advised to change how you look at the image: step farther back, narrow your eyes slightly, or stop focusing on individual branches and try to see the overall arrangement instead of every small detail. In one moment you may see only trees and snow; in the next, a face suddenly seems to emerge from the forest, illustrating how a shift in perception can be so satisfying in hidden-image puzzles. The face was never invisible—your brain had simply interpreted the shapes as parts of a forest until you looked beyond the deer and scanned the entire scene again, wondering how you could have missed it.
