After noticing secret meetings, hushed phone calls, and hidden folders, an employee became convinced they were about to be fired from the company they helped build. Sleepless nights and mounting anxiety fueled their worst fears, turning every unexplained conversation and closed-door discussion into supposed proof that their time at the company was coming to an abrupt end. The more they observed these quiet exchanges, the more certain they felt that decisions were being made about their future without their knowledge, and that the outcome would leave them on the outside of the business they had invested so much effort in.
When they finally met with Richard, the source of much of this mystery, they expected confirmation of their fears but were instead stunned by what he revealed. Rather than planning to dismiss them, Richard explained he was selling the company and stepping down. All the secrecy that had seemed so threatening was actually part of his careful effort to manage the transition. In place of a termination notice, the employee learned that Richard had chosen them as his trusted successor to lead the business. What had looked like a looming personal loss turned out to be an unanticipated promotion and a chance to guide the very company they had once feared they were about to lose.
