That small plastic tag on your new car keys is usually a dealership key-tracking fob, accidentally left attached when you received the keys.
It helps dealerships manage hundreds of keys by connecting each key set to a specific vehicle and recording when staff take or return them.
The tag is generally designed to track the key within the dealership’s inventory system—not your car, commute, or location after you drive away.
So if you find one on your keyring, it’s typically nothing mysterious; it simply belongs to the dealership and can be removed.
