My Ex-Husband Kept the House After Our Divorce — Then His Smart Home Stopped Working

Posted on October 20, 2026

Days after moving his new girlfriend into the house he had kept in our divorce, my ex-husband called me furious, demanding to know why everything had suddenly stopped working. The smart-home controls no longer responded as expected, the security system needed attention, and the connected conveniences he had enjoyed for years were no longer available in the same way. He spoke as though I had deliberately left him with a useless property, expecting me to drop everything and put his household back in order. What he had forgotten was that I had been the person managing the accounts and paying the bills behind those features. The divorce had given him the house, but it had not transferred my personal service agreements into his name. Now, with his new life underway, he was discovering just how much he had taken for granted.

During our marriage, I had set up and maintained the subscriptions supporting the internet, security services, irrigation controls, and other connected systems. I handled the payments and kept everything running, so the house seemed to operate effortlessly. When we separated, I canceled the contracts that belonged to me and closed the accounts I was no longer responsible for maintaining. I had no agreement to continue financing or managing those services after the divorce. Still, my ex-husband seemed convinced that ownership of the property entitled him to every convenience he remembered. His angry call made one thing clear: he had never considered what it would take to keep those systems running without my involvement.

The solution, however, was straightforward, even if he did not like it. He needed to contact the providers, open new accounts, arrange any required installations, and pay for the services himself. If there were questions about what the divorce settlement covered, he could consult an attorney and review the relevant court documents rather than assume I remained responsible. The mortgage, insurance, and other property expenses were separate from the subscriptions I had personally maintained. He owned the building, but the accounts were mine to manage or cancel. My decision did not take away his property; it ended my responsibility for the conveniences attached to it.

Eventually, he would have to accept that the house could remain his without my continuing to run it from a distance. I had not promised to support his next chapter, and I was under no obligation to keep paying for a home where I no longer lived. His frustration could not turn my past efforts into a permanent commitment. For me, the experience brought a sense of closure: the divorce had divided more than property. It had also ended the invisible work I had done for years. He still had his house, but maintaining his new household was finally his responsibility.
